Sonderangebot is rather fun to say isn't it?

Luckily with people I already know the conversations are going beyond cheese and beer as I attempt to talk about art projects, boat restoration and the intricacies of childbirth (not on the agenda yet but it's good to know that one doesn't say "Ich gehe im Labor" in German in case they think you're about to begin some third trimester science experiments).

On Friday I had a halting conversation with an old lady who stopped to admire the blossoming tree I was taking photos of.

Hello.

I love this post. I find that I have absolutely the opposite condition to you. I don't attend class and I'm not really systematic about how I learn. I'm trying my best just to watch television shows and read books in Japanese. I pick stuff that's way over my head quite a lot of the time but I don't pressure myself to read everything or watch even a whole TV show.

When I first started talking to strangers for real (not just asking directions or ordering beers) I found it exhilarating and then frustrating; once you get to know someone you want to be able to say more and more to them and have a conversation like an adult rather than along the lines of:
"I like cheese and I like beer. What food do you like?"
"Um... Can I speak to my real friends now?"

I hope you maintain your motivation.

By the way, my favourite German word is either selbstbedienung, sonderangebot or verkehrsamt. Not that I can use them in sentences any more.

an interesting (and useful) technique I came across many moons ago.... When those thoughts pop unbidden into my head I acknowledge them as I would a silly little person whose opinion I think very little of. Something along the lines of "oh hello nonsense thoughts - here to try and fuck up my life again, hmmmmm?" Just that moment of "pfft" makes me feel immeasurably better...

Reading your article first I find difficult to understand it. But later on I slowly understood it. Since you have shared the feelings it might make you stress free. Good friends will be with us at the time of our sorrows and advice to go in the right path.

Actually I set myself limits of either 30 minutes or a hundred things. It was a pretty easy list to write and I could probably add another 100 things today!

The parallel lives that we live are strange aren't they. I just came back from a week in the UK where I saw some family and friends that I hadn't seen for years, and it felt like no time had passed, but it also felt like the longest week in the world.
